D-Wave lecture by Geordie Rose (IdeaCity 2013)

D-Wave is a Burnaby-based company making Quantum computer chips. They managed to sell some of their products to Nasa, Google, and Lockheed Martin.

The Big Rip Theory HD

Everyone may have heard about Big Bang Theory. But what is Big Rip Theory?
If Big Bang is the birth of the universe, Big Rip is the end of the universe. This theory came out just a couple of years ago. It is interesting but also quite scary.

Dr Quantum - Double Slit Experiment

Quantum theory can be very bizarre if one tries to understand with classic thought. Based on Quantum theory, particle can exist in many different places at the same time. Strictly speaking, the location of the particle is not fixed and is not yet determined until someone actually observes by the means of measurement tool or human eyes. In other words, until it is observed, the location of the particle exists as a possibility function varying across the space so called "Wave function". Therefore, if the wave function looks like sine wave, the possibility of the particle being observed at certain location varies smoothly up and down as you move to different location. However, at the moment of observation event occurred, the wave function collapses into delta function which has a peak at certain position which means the possibility of the particle being in that location is almost certain and the possibility of the particle being in other location is almost zero.

This same phenomenon can be observed in the Double Slit experiment video below. In the video, the pattern of the particles arrived on target becomes different when the particle is observed from when no observation is done. This is because the wave function which determines the probability of an particle being in certain location changes at the moment when the measurement is done. If no measurement is done to the particle, the wave function will not be touched, resulting in different result.

One very interesting topic to think about is what does it really mean by "observation". We know that if one person sees an object, that object is observed. However, if we use some machine to record event without a human looking at the recording video, is it considered to be observation, and it will change the wave function even before human actually watches the video? Or is it that, even in the video, the location of object just exist as many different possibilities until a human actually starts watching the recorded video. If the latter is true (which I think it is), it means our perception actually changes physical world by merely looking at it. At the moment when we perceived the location of the object, we actually changes the wave function of the universe.

Affecting the physical word by mere perception sounds very surprising, but if we come to think of it, we are actually doing the similar thing all the time. Our body can be changed depending on how we think. As a very simple example, when we get nervous, our body temperature goes up, and our heart starts beating quicker. Merely thinking differently actually affects the physical world.

It sounds to me that somehow quantum theory might be related to understanding how our perception work with our body. This is very interesting discussion topic. Please share your thought if you are also interested in this topic.

Enjoy the video.

수퍼맨의 S 자는 SUPERMAN의 앞글자 이외에 또 다른 의미가 있다. (Hidden meaning of the letter S on Superman's chest.)

[Written in 2006]

요즘 나오는 Superman Returns 덕분에 우리의 수퍼맨이 다시 인기를 끌것 같습니다.
Thanks to the recently-released movie, Superman Returns, our hero Superman seems getting popularity again.

People might be curious about where the letter S on the chest of superman originally came from. I saw that on the Naver Ji-sik-in website, someone explained that the letter S should come from the first letter of superman. Of course that is one of reasons, but there is actually another hidden reason for it. In order to know it, we need to go back to the time when the author started writing the Superman story.

1914년에 캐나다 토론토에서 태어난 Joe Shuster 는 학찰시절 Jerry Siegel 이라는 친구를 만나게 됩니다. 이 둘은 공상과학 글 쓰는 것을 어릴적부터 무척이나 좋아했습니다. 그 둘은 어느시점부턴가 협력하여 Science Fiction 이라는 공상 과학 잡지를 만들어서 주변 친구들에게 팔기 시작했습니다.
Back in 1914, Joe Shuster who was born in Toronto, Canada, met his friend Jerry Siegel in school. They both loved writing scientific fiction stories since they were young. One day they decided to make a magazine called "Science Fiction", and started selling it to people.

In 1933, they created a character called Superman in one of stories in their magazine, but at that time, the superman appeared as a villain who has a tremendous strength, not the hero as we see today. But they soon realized that the popularity of Dr. Fu Manchu who was also villain character in another story in the same magazine could be cooled down because of the creation of the superman. Thus, they changed their mind and decided to present Superman as a hero in order to keep their business going well.

하지만 이 때의 영웅 Superman 은 사람들에게 별로 인기가 없었습니다. 그래서 그들은 날밤을 새며 고심한 끝에 결국 Superman 을 두개의 인격을 가진 인물로 만들기로 결심합니다. 이 때가 바로 1934년. 그들은 Superman 의 평상시 인물의 이름을 영화배우 Clark Gable 에서 딴 Clark 과 Kent Taylor 에서 딴 Kent 를 합쳐 Clark Kent 로 만듭니다.
However, Superman at that time wasn't very popular. After much consideration, they decided to make Superman have two different lives, one as a hero and another as a regular person. This time was 1934, and they named him Clark Kent; his first name Clark after the movie actor Clark Gable and his last name Kent after Kent Taylor.

그리고 이들은 Superman 의 가슴에 S 자를 놓기로 하는데, 이것은 수퍼맨의 앞자 S 를 의미하기도 하지만, 이 Superman 을 탄생시킨 그들 자신의 이름인 Shuster 와 Siegel 의 앞자를 의미하기도 했습니다. 이것이 바로 수퍼맨의 S 자가 가진 또 다른 비밀입니다.
Then they also decided to put the letter S on Superman's chest, and this S stands for not only the first character of Superman but also the first letter of their name, Shuster and Siegel. This is another secret hidden in the letter S on Superman's chest.

그리고 한가지 더 말하자면, Superman 에서 나오는 여자 주인공 Lois Lane 는 그 당시 실존 인물을 모델로 해서 만들어졌으며, 그 인물이 나중에 Siegel 의 부인이 됩니다.
In addition, the female character, Lois Lane, in Superman, was made based on an actual person at that time, and she later became Siegel's wife.

재미있는 스토리죠? ^^
Isn't this interesting? ^^
